SBJ wins national award for Day in the Life series

Springfield Business Journal took home the second-place award for best use of multimedia during the Alliance of Area Business Publishers’ summer conference in Dallas.

The silver honor recognized SBJ’s 2016 Day in the Life series for “interesting videos, photo galleries, graphics and good writing to draw readers into these stories,” according to the judges’ comments. The member organization for business publications gave out 111 editorial excellence awards on June 24 after narrowing the field of 483 entries from 43 publications in the United States, Canada and Australia, according to an AABP news release.

Crain’s Chicago Business took home the top rank in the multimedia category for its “10 Years After the Bust” feature on economic recovery following the recession. Springfield’s Biz 417 received the bronze for its “20 Under 30” young professionals awards.

For SBJ’s documentary-style Day in the Life series, writers shadows area businesspeople to report on their typical day. The series features photos shot in black and white, extended photo galleries online and blogs with the writers’ personal takeaways. The 2016 series also included video summaries of each day.

Last year’s series covered “The Mystery Hour” host Jeff Houghton, Missouri State University College of Business Dean Stephanie Bryant, Springfield Police Department Chief Paul Williams and Miller Commerce LLC owner Matt E. Miller.

The 2017 Day in the Life feature in SBJ’s June 19 print edition followed Silver Dollar City’s Lisa Rau, Springfield Mayor Ken McClure and Lathrop Gage partner Randell Wallace.
