MSU extends football coach Stec’s contract

Despite his losing record, Missouri State University extended football coach Dave Steckel’s contract by two years.

Steckel, aka coach Stec, signed on through Jan. 31, 2022. He originally signed a five-year contract to become head football coach in December 2014, according to a news release.

The terms of his contract are unchanged. Steckel’s base salary is $270,000 and he also has the ability to earn up to $135,000 more from incentives for making the playoffs or meeting attendance benchmarks.

"Stec is a positive fixture within our community and has demonstrated the qualities we are looking for to improve our team on and off the field," MSU Director of Athletics Kyle Moats said in the release. "We have confidence in his ability to continue building up our team, and we feel this move will help him and his staff as they recruit young men who will help us achieve that goal."

During his inaugural 2015 season, the team tallied just one win against 10 losses. Last year, Steckel led the Bears to a 4-7 overall record and conference tally of 2-6. Last fall, 50,485 fans attended the team’s five home games at Robert W. Plaster Stadium, according to its website. The team’s first game in the upcoming season is scheduled Sept. 2, when the Bears face off against the University of Missouri Tigers for the first time since 1923. The game is at MU.
