Fresenius to buy Akorn for $4.3B

Germany’s Fresenius SE agreed to buy Illinois-based generic drugmaker Akorn Inc. for $4.3 billion.

Including debt, the Akorn deal has an enterprise value of $4.75 billion.

Separately, Fresenius announced plans to buy Merck KGaA’s portfolio of biosimilars, which are copycat versions of complex biotechnology drugs, for $184.7 million, plus licensing fees.
